Last month, we have shared a video tutorial about adding markers to HTML5 maps, and here is another tutorial about adding rich-content infobox even you know little or nothing about any coding.
In the updated HTML5 Map Builder, users can now insert images, customize the image position, edit font style, and insert external video into the infobox without coding. Advanced html editor is also provided if users wanna add other features to the infobox.
Last week, we have introduced an interactive map about unemployment in Oregon, today we found another heat map showcases unemployment status in California.

Sunday, the New York City Police Departmentand NYC’s Information Technology and Telecommunications Department have created a new online crime map for displaying locations of major crimes(e.g. murder, robbery, rape, burglary) have occurred that users can search locations by ZIP code, address or police precinct. It is believed that this crime map system can help New Yorkers and other map users to better understand locations of major crimes that are consistent.
This map can be viewed in several levels: Precinct Map, Graduated Point Map, and Heat Map.
Graduated Point Map
The heat map shows the concentration of crimes, which are measured by how many occurrences there are per 1000 residents, with least to most depicted ranging in a pale orange to a rust color in a given area.
Users can always search data by the current year, the prior year, and by month within the current year, that currently we can find information from January 2012 to October 2013. This NYC Crime Map will regularly update by week.
Recently, a UK retailer, Mobile Unlocked, created an interactive heat map about iPhone 5S prices in all countries. This map shows the relationship between the iPhone 5S prices and the National GDP (PPP) per capita for all countries where it is available.
The map was created based on the data from the local Apple stores for each country or a listed official supplier from the Apple site that were available on November 18th 2013. According to the map, iPhone 5S is most expensive in China with 9.55% of the average GDP, while it is the cheapest in the USA with just 1.15%.
Since iPhone 5S is going to be launched in more countries, the map will be updated later.

This heat map is very informative and user-friendly by creating various category legends for map users to better find related information. Map users can select heat maps by GDP, Prices in US Dollars ($) or GB Pounds (£), and prices exclude tax in various currencies. When map users mouseover the regions, detailed information will be popped-up. There are also an interactive ranking list and interactive chart next to the map for provided additional information to the map readers.
Data is well-presented in this interactive heat map that we strongly recommend our readers to check out the map by clicking the above map image.
Christmas is just in the corner that many maps have been created for pinpointing locations with Christmas events. Here is an interactive Australia map for pinpointing locations with amazing Christmas light displays.
This map is still updating with information provided by public that you can feel free to provide information or photos to the map creator.
In the previous post, we have introduced how to create heat map in Google Maps, and here we just found another heat map showcases homeless population in New Jersey that darker purple refers to larger homeless population from 2012 to 2013.
According to the data from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, there were around 12,000 New Jerseyans were homeless across the 21 counties last year that was the lowest level in the past five years. However, the annual point-in-time homeless counts have not declined throughout New Jersey that Atlantic, Essex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Somerset and Union counties all counted more homeless population this year, especially Ocean County.
Nationally, there were 4% drop of homeless population when compare to the previous year, and by 8% drop since 2008.
Now you can click the below image to see the detailed information by counties:

There is heat map legend clearly indicates heat map values for various counties, and this map is content-sufficient with both mouseover and mouse click info boxes. However, content within mouse click info box can be better presented by bold subtitles, dividers, or tables.
Many people may think that there are more women than men in the United States, and actually it is quite true that there are only ten states have more men than women in United States.
The heat map, based on 2010 U.S. Census data, shows the ratio of men to women in each state that darker blue refers to higher men population. Overall, there are about 97 men to 100 women, and only following ten states have more men than female:
North Dakota (102.1:100)
South Dakota (100.1:100)

There is one thing that I think can greatly improved the map design with map legend for indicating the countries’ colors. Furthermore, interactive effects (e.g. infobox, group highlight) can be added for enriching the map design.
The Corruption Perceptions Index 2013 has been released that it scores 177 countries and territories from 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean). An interactive heat map with popup boxes has been created:
According to the map, Denmark and New Zealand ranks 1st while Afghanistan, North Korea & Somalia ranks least in the ranking. The U.S. is the 19th least corrupt country, and 2/3 countries score below 50 that indicates how serious and wide spread the corruption is in our current society. Map users can hover the country region to see the ranking, this year and previous year’s scores in the the info boxes.

Clear heat map with popup infobox, map legend, and pleasant map color settings. Though there is still a minor suggestion for the map if option for enabling countries’ abbreviations is provided since not all the map users can immediately recognized specific country without labels.
Here is another image map for visualizing the data by different circles which darker red refers to higher corruption level. This chart has already categorized countries to different groups by the scores, and larger the circles size means more countries in that score level.
Christmas is coming after Thanksgiving, and here is an interactive map for Christmas lights in New Jersey that reminds you to start decorating Christmas lights in your home. You can find places that invite public to visit the lights, and mouse click the pins for details.
This map is a crowdsourced map that map users can provide information (e.g. addresses, town names, photos) of best places to see Christmas lights across New Jersey by using the hashtag #LightUpNJ on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook page. Map users can also send form to them.
Map Review: 3.5/5 Stars
This map is an interesting tool that we can search locations to visit various amazing Christmas lights. However, since the map is a crowdsourced map, which information has to be approved and selected by administrator, and has been created for just a while, there is not enough information in the map. Alternatively, this map can collect more information in shorter time by enabling real “crowdsourcing” feature on the map that map users can directly add pins and information on the map, and the administrator can always edit the added pins in the control panel.
